Alphabet, Google neighbourhood

Google is building a neighbourhood

The parent company of Google, Alphabet is working with Sidewalk Labs Toronto to bring a 12 Acre smart community to the lower east side of the waterfront. The location is primarily anchored at Parliament street and Queens Quay and will be labelled as ‘Quay East’. This is amazing news and a good way to complete the old derelict portion of the east end of  the waterfront, formally the old Victory Soya Silos which were built in the 1940’s and decommissioned in 1991.

The site was originally purchased to build a Home Depot but with massive push back from the city and residents the project was scrapped and purchased by a consortium in 2010 and now slated from something much greater and welcoming. Sidewalk Labs has already committed $50M towards this project and will work with Toronto waterfront to establish the foot print and development plans over the next year to get the ball rolling. Once the project has been implemented Google plans on moving their Canadian headquarters here and I suspect they’ll build a condo portfolio offering units to the public but for now we have to wait for plans to be submitted for review.
